Heading upstream

Muddy river, willows hanging over water. 270 elevation at water/270-285 above banks. River ave. 2 feet deep, strong current

Behind the willows

Destination-Montezuma Bluffs. 340 elevation. Highest bank for many miles. Oyster toe hold for early ocean at 362 elevation.
High hill in south Georgia, probably southern most oyster bed at this aged ocean. Lots of skulls.

Mission accomplished

And oysters/assorted bivalves

Typical low bank game trail access for low water season. A forest drainage allowing easy access to climb out of river. Deer stand goes here.

chasmanthium latifolium-river oats in full seed. valuable river bank stabilization plant, upper tier

Have you ever noticed how very few people are on the Withlacoochee ? No worries, the bones are well hidden.
Succulent pirates are a favored treat, but larger stew pots needed. and are on order...

Yes Donnie, limestone gumbo. Let me see if there is a close-up.
This is the best I could do. Looks like an assortment of bivalves and misc creatures.
Lets assume the original contents have moved on, or changed state drastically

Some of those shells are an inch thick bsky4463. I collected a bucket of pieces and whole shells. To be tumbled, in a thick protective mud slurry.

Not expecting a polish, but a rounded product that could be buffed to a polish.

It is a shame that it is not a really iridescent form of 'mother of pearl' like abalone shells.
Will be curious to see the layers as rounded.

Whereabouts were you on the Flint?

Hwy 49 about a mile from the center of Montezuma Jan. There is a bridge w/boat ramp. Then about 1.5 miles upstream on right.
Called Montezuma Bluffs State Park above the river. It just so happens the river carved into the bluff and exposed this ancient oyster bed.
Similar bluff at McBean. Downstream from Augusta 40 miles on the Savannah River. Except those oysters are well over a foot long.

Kayaking up Flint at Montezuma not going to work, current very strong. Need motor.
