We wanted to go fishing on Labor Day, but did not want to fight the crowds in San Diego. Thought maybe we could go inland, do some fresh water fishing at Santee Lakes or something? Eh, that would have been a zoo as well. Then a light bulb came on - fish for bass in a private lake at a friend's house in Alpine! (Thank you, Richard!) Stopped in Lakeside on the way there to pick up three dozen shiners for bait, then onward to Alpine.
Quiet and beautiful
The lake was way down, due to the drought
This dock is normally only a foot or two above water
Picking out some goodies. The bass here will hit plastic worms, but we usually just use shiners.
Still waters
The dam end Reflections
This cormorant hung around most of the day, but wasn't a problem.
One hot dog (poor Lucy). I had a gallon jug of water, was dumping it on her all day. She has swum there before, but the mud around the edge of the water was pretty treacherous.
Froggers!
A lunker / lurker
Mr. Bob on the hard rocks...
Beautiful tangerine-orange dragonfly, throwing his shadow on the bottom of an aluminum can.
This was a catfish I farmed (what we call it when we lose one), came off the hook as I lifted it out of the water, DOH! The net was 30 feet to the east of me, wasn't going to have time to go get it.
You can almost see it!
Had some awesome thunderheads build up into the sky. Heard rumbles of thunder at one point, but it was too far east of us.
The shade under the dock was our only salvation. Without that, we'd have been done and headed home hours earlier. Was very hot and humid.
Now for the fish. Had to show you every last one Bob caught:
Bob is getting a little sunburned, ya think?
A little tired, maybe, too?
Didn't catch my first fish until 1:44 pm. Bob already had four by then! Lookit the bucket mouth on that fish!
Catching my second fish. We hooked up these two at the same time, a gal we met that was on a kayak took some pics with her cell phone for us, and sent them to Bob's phone. (Thanks, Carri!) Didn't get time stamps on those photos, so just guessing on the time.
Fish two for me
I think we (well, BOB) did pretty well. Last time we went fishing at the bay, it was Jean 9 - Bob 1. Monday was his turn to shine. (I let him fish in the better location, lol!). The fish were biting all day, they didn't care how hot it was. We could have kept them, but these we caught, took a pic and released, so we never even cared how long they were or what they weighed. But in the past, we've found they average around three lbs, a little more, a little less.
Next, I'll upload some pics of yellowfin tuna my brother and nephew caught on a half day boat. Due to the impending El Nino warming the waters, the fish have been biting like crazy!

And just to show we have fish in the ocean
Lots of fish this trip (8/21/15), my brother and nephew caught three of them, the largest was 30 lbs. They went out a few days later and caught five. What do you do with it? They gave quite a bit away to friend and neighbors, froze some, and had fish every day for a week.
Grilled
Smoked. Had some of this on Sunday, it was delish!
These were from earlier this year, 4/12/15.
Bob wants to take a day off next month, and we'll head out on the morning half day boat. These are the type of fish he likes to catch!

You guys(Bob) caught 40 pounds of largemouth. Looks like they(Bob's) were all 3+pounds. Somebody(Bob) is a great fisherman. Can't believe he overwhelmed you so much Jean. About that 9:1 day, are you sure about that ? Are you sure you had a catfish on ?
It would be good to hear an explanation of why you had such bad luck ? You know, fisherlady excuses...
Those ocean fish are all hard fighting pelagic types, nice big fish.
Looks like a good time had for all. Poor Lucy probably climbed under the dock.

Yes, I had a catfish on, I know what they look like. And I did catch TWO largemouth! The explanation? I bought him a new (to him) fishing pole at the swap meet (early birthday present for him) between those two times fishing, lol. Gotta be it... We were all under the dock, getting out of the sun.

Wow! There is nothing better than catching your own food, cooking it outside, and eating it outside. Thanks for taking us along. You two are pros!

You know the owner of that pond? As in he has complete control of who can access those waters?
Thanks for the coolio trip report.

He doesn't own the "pond" (lake, actually), he is one of a number of people whose homes abut it. So no, he does not have complete control over who can access it. The homeowners all pay for the upkeep and use in their HOA fees. You're welcome. Thanks for thinking it was coolio! We had fun. Will have to do it again when it is not so hot.

Ya all make it look easy like that ! We have a pond in the back that overflows into a creek. I know there are fish in there but between the mosquitos, ticks and poison ivy we don't pluck them out often.I'd rather armchair fish right here. That grilled pic looks more like pork chops than a filet. Good eats guys !

Yes, I would definitely say so. Too many homes around, and people using (mostly kayaking) the lake. Would imagine using guns a definite no-no.
I did see a few ducks out there, tho'.
