A friend of the family asked if I had a spare tumbler I could loan them to see if they could get their 8 yr old to try tumbling the rocks they found this summer walking the beaches. I have plenty of 3 pound Lortone barrels laying around but they were originally for my home built tumbler so I do not have frames for them. I was wondering if anyone has a decent 3A single or 3B double frame laying around without barrel(s) that they would be wiling to part with. My other option is to have them buy a harbor freight cheapo just to get their feet wet but if I can get a frame cheap enough I will just give it to them with a barrel and grit to see if I can get another youngster hooked. Not looking for a handout just something affordable so I can donate it. If nobody has anything I can hit up ebay.
Thanks, Chuck

Don't start them with Harbor Freight. That will just discourage them. Can't you hammer together a quick homebuilt?

yeah Chuck... and when you finish with theirs, can you whip me up one that can run four Thumler's 15 lb barrels along with a 40 lb barrel on the bottom level? I've been meaning to hammer one together, but you could probably have it done by Friday. That would save my having to figure out all that pulley math stuff.
Thanks!

I made an excel document back when I built mine so all you do is type in your pulley sizes, shaft size, barrel size and motor RPMS and it spits out what RPM the barrel will spin. No more math to do. The sad truth is that a very small percentage of kids that try tumbling rocks will actually stick with it for more then a couple batches. I can get a lortone 3A with barrel on ebay for $30 right now but I just thought I would check to see if someone had a frame in their junk pile first.

MrP great build, awesome tumble setup in a small foot print. I am curious as to what size HP motor you are running, I assume it's 1725. Cheers

I believe ya'll may have missed the jesting in my post. yeah... kinda like that Mr. P Not sure that Chuck is a welder though, so I may have to settle for some of his fine cabinetry work. My wife likes mahogany... I like your no nonsense build there Mr. P is there a thread on it? If you stop back by and answer the motor question, I'd like to know how far apart the rollers are for the 40 lb barrel. I assume they are a wider spread than the smaller barrels. What is the RPM on your 40? Thank you. Is my tumbler ready yet Chuck?

I have one of those lortone 3A motors still left that I bought from you awhile ago and I found an old 3A (gem sparkle) that I should be able to get going with that motor and a few other parts from the rockshed. bsky4463 It is a 1725 RPM 1/4 HP. I had another setup with a similar motor on it and lost power in the house. The motor couldn't start and burned out so on this setup I put a relay in that keeps it running until power drops but has to be restarted with a manual switch.

I use Gorilla Duct tape on the metal edges of the 15lb barrels so I don't have metal to metal contact. I used 3/4" shafts because the price of 1" pillow block bearings was a lot more then 3/4"........................................MrP

Drummond Island Rocks I have a 33B frame sitting in my shop, newer one but I was having some issues with getting it to turn with loaded barrels so I threw it aside, hit me up and lets jabber about it a lil bit.
