I was moving things around in my man cave tonight and realized that this piece deserved to be in this thread.
Notice the small chunk that was my last post.

Not too impressed. Was hoping it was all purple and red. Small little lines are healed big ones like shown in vise are clearly not. Also not all of it was petrified. Knocked an odd piece off the outside that I could see was not fracture free and some of it crumbled in my hand and felt like rotten wood. Also bled like crazy in saw

Absolutely stunning pet wood pics all!
I'll have to get some pics of my fav pieces. I have one slab that looks like it is fresh out of a sawmill the grain is so well preserved! I also have a limb or root from Northern Ca that has an incredible chocolate colored center with a light tan outer layer that made a stunning display!

broseph82, I like the piece that you recently posted. It reminds me of Picasso jasper or Imperial jasper. Don't have much pet wood, but a pretty chunk from Arizona. xXxAlisha91xXx kindly sent some beautiful slabs of rainbow pet wood to me. Have a few pieces of the seafoam-colored Hampton Butte, and polished slabs. Arizona pet wood 'chunk' that I removed from the "rock" garden because I thought it may crumble even though it is agatized. Discovered one of the beryl xtals (from Hogg mine?) broke that was in the rock garden. I guess the change in temperature caused it to fracture. Since jakesrocks posted his gorgeous cycad pics, I am not sure if this is a cycad or not. We had a nice discussion trying to identify it. @rocks2dust gave me tips on how to test it, too. Cycad?

Could be Opalized, hard to tell from a picture, where does it come from? It sure looks great. Opalized wood is fairly soft compared to agage and it will chip real easy as compared to agate.

A couple pieces did chip off as I was washing it up. I have no clue where it came from. I recently bought a bunch of rough from someone a couple states away. woodman. It's def very soft!!

The wood one finds at Stinking Water, for the most part is fairly easy to id. A good macro lens or 10x loupe will let you see the growth rings and pores. I use a book by R. Bruce Hoadley. I t shows most of the common woods in the U.S. by comparing what you see to pictures in the book you can get pretty close. It is not 100% because the woods growing 15 to 100 million years ago just may be a bit different than the ones growing today. That is why people use the term "like" in describing what they think is Oak, and this picture is "like" White Oak. Part of the fun is collecting, part cutting and polishing and part figuring out what you have if you can.

Pretty much impossible to tell with out seeing the cell structure better. One thing it is not is Oak.

Found a 12" piece in my shop I didn't know I had. Cut off the end and this is what happened. Here's what the rock looked like And the first official slab(edit:it's what the slab looked like. This is the end of the remaining rock) Just beautiful

Sadly, the rest of my pet wood is stashed in storage alongside a few hundred dollars worth of other fun rocks. I decided to creep around here and saw this. I miss my rocks! I'm wanting to get some sort of setup soon and maybe I can get some of them out to play soon since I don't have time to polish anything with my dremel with a 2 year old and a 2 month old. Haha
