Interesting superstition. Is opal commonly found in pet wood, seems I've seen the term "opalized"(?) associated with pet wood several times? The term "opalized" used with petrified wood is not the same as precious opal which shows the flashes of color. opalized wood is closer to common opal in that it is very brittle and will fracture very easy. Some wood, like from Arizona is agate material and most Stinking Water material from Oregon is Opalized. Some Oregon wood is jasper like also. There is no end to the types of material that is out there and the fun in finding it, working it up and then sharing on this site. I wish I knew more on the chemistry of it all.

Thanks for the replies on the "opal" aspect of pet wood. Just trying to figure things out...somewhat.

That firewood is indeed mesmerizing. The multi-color areas reminds me of deep space astro-photography...the solid red areas reminds me of hot lava.

As I stated earlier in another topic...I have had this petwood (47 pounder)with me for over 30 years-dragging it from house to house, state to state, when I moved! Finally I just headed to eastern Oregon and had Roy cut it up for me....Here is one of the slabs from the tree... Very unusual piece to say the least! If you look at it carefully, you see the bottom part of the core is missing. But wait, look up to the left corner, it's there.... Something happened to this tree before it was petrified and it broke and shifted that part of the log upward, than it stayed there after it petrified... Cool or what.....Has a bit of agate in it too.....I found this in Yellowstone county in Montana..... It is amazing what one finds. I wonder if your black slab will bleach out if laid out in the sun? A lot of them will really change. nope it was in bleach for two weeks no change
