I can't help it, but that Fire Wood/opalized pet wood is fantastic!!! I take it that Fire Wood is specific to areas out west? In other words, is there a chance of finding something like that in the southeast? We have pet wood, but not sure how it compares...I need to go back through this thread and see what's been shown for my area. That Fire Wood....rocks!!!

From the hills near the Boron Dry Lakes in California. This wood isn't plentiful, but is solid & colorful.

Jake, in your piece of Boron pet wood I see a dark, rough ocean with the surf in the foreground along with a red sky sunset. Nice!

I'm not a big fan of petrified wood, don't know why but it is what it is. I do have some I collected in Arizona and Montana. The Arizona material is more colorful but the bigger pieces I found in Montana. One of the best pieces I have is from Three Forks, MT. I dug it up at a fishing access when my then boss wanted me to stop to let him relieve himself. I saw a little bit sticking out of the ground and it turned out to be a decent sized piece. [a href=" "]link[/a] The biggest piece I have was given to me by my ex-boss after I found it in his basement so technically I found it, at least that's my story...lol. It is from Tom Minor Basin, MT and was collected about 50 years ago before a lot of the regulations in that area were put into place. He cut it so it is flat on both ends. Makes a great door stop...lol. It's not real colorful but does look cool.

amygdule people have also recently found opal in Miss as well. Palm wood is hard to find in LA from what I've been told and the opal is a different story as well (the mine shut down a long time ago and is on private property). Scored this palm wood for pretty cheap at a rock sale today

Not all wood is beautiful or colorful. I've kept this piece of fern wood just because it's an ugly duckling.

Love this thread and all the eye candy! I don't have slabs or chunks, but I do have a cab of a strange blueish piece of wood that I love. I have posted it before, but here it is again. I know nothing about it.

I like that one, Tela. Actually, I like ALL the ones posted!
Here's a few I've picked up here and there. First three are from the free rock pick we went to in Sept 2014.
I think I gave this one to someone. Panamark?
Some Hampton Butte from same place as above.
Reverse side. I probably got a bout 20 pieces of this.
Some AZ rainbow wood.
Also AZ.
Will see what else I can share pics of. Jean

A few years ago I was wandering around Stinking Water and not having any success so I figured I would return to a spot I had found the year before. I had found a few chips there and thought it would be worth to do some digging. The spot was on a cow trail and had a small spring seep coming out right where I wanted to dig. It was a hot afternoon and when I got there, a rattlesnake had decided it would be a good place to cool off. He left with a bit of help, and the whole time I spend digging, I was looking over my shoulder making sure he did not come back.
Did find a bit of wood but nothing real great.
