Missed all of you folks. We made it to Los Angeles. Most of our stuff we shipped, either got damaged, lost, or otherwise mangled. My wife's mother sent several packages back and the shipper threw them out. Arrrgh. Our van blew the engine on the highway three blocks short of our destination. Other than that, we are here, disoriented, and our lives are no longer our own. Her mother is high maintenance. I will be needing some real advice from people who know in getting our ducks in a row here. I missed us during the trip but we are safe. It will be a good chance to rebuild on ledge, not sand. We are safe, the cats are ok, and the project is beginning. We feel fortunate, not many people get a chance to restart like we are and we want to really learn more. It is exciting and the stones are indeed contagious! Doc

Hi Doc! Glad you made it in one piece. As much can't be said about your stuff. That's aweful. But it's gotta go up from here, right? Good luck and keep in touch. We've missed you ;D

HI DOC! I wondered what became of you. The board has been busy as you can see. Sorry about all the troubles in moving, but it will give you something to chuckle about years later I'm sure. It just isn't too funny now huh? I'm positive you made a good move, and one you won't regret. It is too easy to just stick with the old routine and never take chances, I envy you and your wife for your courage. Good luck with your new lives buddy, I'm glad to see you back on the board, Don

Welcome Back! Good to hear from you, but sorry about the circumstances that made things so difficult. I am glad to know you and your wife are well, ...and... I am still wrapping. I have yet to throw in a towel of any sort. Although a few shop rags have been tossed about. And thanks for thinking of us here in 'Cyber Land'. Later- Banjo

Hey Doc. Welcome to Calif. Glad you made it and glad to have you back on the board. I know you'll pick up right where you left off, but with a whole new list of clients. With your talent, no problem.
Good luck, Ed

Hey Doc, glad to see you back onboard. I know I have missed your posts and pics of your work. Sure everyone else has also! You had such a bad experience getting there, that things are bound to be looking up from now on. Even though things are crazy now, it's kinda neat pulling up stakes and "heading West, young man and wife" for a new start, isn't it? I will be needing some real advice from people who know in getting our ducks in a row here.I might be able to help with the shipping problems. High maintenance mother in law probably does not fall under things I can do and/or give advice on though.

Thanks for all the support. My two Neycraft kilns were thrown over the fence and the elements, and insulating material is in powder form. We will survive. Doc

As for your damaged items especially your kilns I would contact the shippers and present them with copies of pictures and a copy of your receipt, telling them that you expect them to replace your new kilns and any other items they misplaced or damaged. That is just unacceptable. Tami

A lot of sad things took place. The shippers discount any responsibility, items are still in limbo for a variety of reasons, it goes on, and on. Essentially, we came here to be with my wife's mother who is 87. Upon our arrival, her confusion dramatically increased. She is doing ok, all things considered, and we are trying to give her a quality life. We were about to leave Fl., and my wife called her and she told us she had been put on a bizzarre mailing list and she was refusing everything. We have had to backtrack the items, etc., etc. What ever the price, we are reconciled we are doing some good. She was virtually alone and surrounded by predators. The greatest satisfaction I have gotten. In the packing to come here I found the ruby I cut for my wife's engagement ring that in the excitement I had misplaced. We are also on natural gas which is a better torch medium than propane. Once I have finished tiling the bathroom and kitchen I expect to set up my bench in the remodeled room. My original bench I made from plans from Lapidary Journal. I am designing my new bench around the Benchmate. That is the most versitile jewelers tool I have seen short of the rolling mill, which I have to also get. From the darkness I see a light. With each step it becomes more clear. I also have the privelege of all you. There is no one else who would know. The wind blew but the flame is still there. Doc

One thing that often get results is the threat of a lawyer, many companies don't want to mess with something like that and will either settle or surprise here is your stuff. Besides that is why moving companies have insurance to cover damage. Tami

Greetings All,
Sounds like the start of an old Neil Young song...
"Think I'll pack it in and By a pickup Take it out to LA Find a place to call my own and try to fix up Start a brand new day"
I wish you and yours well in yalls new home.

Welcome back Doc!! You were definitely missed here on the board! Consider yourself fortunate that the 3 of you made it safe and sound. Stuff is replaceable (although often expensive to do), people are not. I'm sure things with your mother-in-law will get better as soon as you begin to settle in. I am envious that you were able to pull up stakes and move like that. My hubby and I would love to move to one of the southern states, but alas I cannot. I must stay and tend to my ailing parents. Anyway, glad your back!!

Welcome back Doc! I was wondering where you went. Anyhow, you live in a rockhounds paridise now. You're right where all the good rocks are. Me, I have to drive 6-7 hours to get there. Take advantage of you location. Glad to have you back! Cheers!

I am glad you made it safe as well, Riverotter is right, most things can be replaced, humans can't. Tami
