I have been tumbling for about 10 months now and have yet to try to burnish them. I have some questions
1) Does it really make a difference?
2) What should I use as far as soaps?
3) Should ceramic media be used?
4) How long?
5) Do I do this for hard or soft rocks or both?

1) It can, but not always. I think it's sometimes worth the time. But I only burnish between final grit (usually 1,000) and the polish stage.
2) Many here use 20 Mule Team Borax. Others, shavings off an Ivory soap bar. Others - other type soap.
3) Can be if new or clean of ALL grit (new ceramic media should be run by itself to clean up and wear off rough edges). I use plastic pellets.
4) 24 hours is plenty, 12 hours probably enough.
5) Both. Experiment and see what works for you. You may find it's not worth the time / bother.
I usually only burnish on loads that I really care, which is maybe half the time.

It was a good question. Hopefully, others will chime in with their thoughts.
And, welcome to the forum!
