Used a vib lap for the first time. I got through the first stage and learned a lot - like what it sounds like when the motor mount breaks, how to take it apart, and what it's supposed to sound like - a lot nicer! And my wife let me move it closer to the house now. Rocks are flat. How do I tell when the 600 grit stage is done? Time, condition, other?

Mark the flat with a pencil or marker and when the mark is gone.

I did that for the 220 stage. Same thing works for the 600 even though its already flat? Is that because of the graphite gets down in the scratches I can't see with the eye? Thanks

You are done with the 600 grit stage when all the scratches from the previous stages are out. I typically run the 600 stage by time. Softer materials (septarian nodules, dugway geodes, or something that undercuts) are 4 to 6 hours. I let harder materials (agate, jasper, wood, thundereggs) run 12 hours. These times are longer than necessary but the 600 stage will determine how nice of a polish is achieved.

after the 600 stage you should have a scratch free dull shine on you slab how long depends on the stage before mine are on this stage around a hour or so

Mark the flat with a pencil or marker and when the mark is gone. x2 on this one. I use a black or blue Sharpie and make cross hatch markings across the entire surface so that I end up with a grid of 1/2 inch squares across the face of the rock. When then the marks are all gone, I'll move the item to the next stage. If you're polishing slabs, I use rubber cement and anchor some 1 pound fishing weights to them to help provide some additional friction via the weight. Paul
