ok, so last night I changed my media mixture a bit after a reply from another member reinforcing my thoughts that I needed a harder media type than the steel punches I'm cleaning if I wanted the the steel surface to be smoothed rather than simply removing the rust from the punches surface.
I have a punch of tiny stainless steel punches (3/8" diam rather than the 1" diam of the mild steel punches I use). I've picked out these stainless from the many mild steel ones I've used over the years. thinking stainless is harder than mild I thought they may begin to polish the large punches where the ceramic media was having little effect once the rust was removed. I also received the soluble oil I'd been waiting for to hopefully keep the freshly cleaned punches from immediately rusting when taken from the vibrator.
so... is it the stainless media or the soluble oil/water mixture that creates the black residue I found this morning? or is it a combination of the two. I'm pretty sure the residue means "something" is being broken down & it's likely the mild steel punches being effected or polished by the addition of the stainless media.
I found this another time recently but thought it was the from using the media bought from harbor freight I'd added then, small green resin media labeled as rust removal. I'd added it because the new bowl I'd made was too large & I was short on media. that was before I busted up all the ceramic tile which I've used since.
I added a bit of dawn dishwashing detergent to try to remove the greasy residue since the fluid I had circulating all night had no effect on keeping things clean while tumbling.
I believe the detergent will clean the contents which are currently covered thoroughly by the greasy black residue but will the detergent also break down the fluid I'm using since it's a water soluble oil & water mixture?
Is there another fluid I should run through when using stainless & ceramic media? I have many cleaning products, including a concentrated degreaser. would a mixture of water/degreaser keep the reaidue away when using stainless media?
Then switch to the ceramic only media & soluble oil fluid for a final clean & rust inhibitor?
any thoughts/ideas are greatly appreciated!
