hi all, need expert input on a Taurus ring saw I use a speedster xl to cut my clam shells, when cutting shapes you have to be real careful making turns. breaking a fair share of blades, is the ring saw much better for cutting shapes hearts, whales, sharks etc. as you know cutting shells is tricky very brittle, any info on ring saws would be appreciated, also anyone have a used ring saw for sale thanking you in advance joejan Read more: forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/72749/ring-speedster#ixzz3r6A5FR6b

I've used the Gryphon ring saw and band saws. I like the band saw much better. The only advantage of a ring saw is the cut in any direction feature. Most shapes can be done with a band saw. The drive system is much less complicated. You can get jointed ring blades to cut inside patterns so I guess that is another advantage of ring saws. Shells are soft so maybe not an issue but for cutting agate the extra thickness of a ring blade over band makes for painfully slow cutting. Gryphon ring saw was developed to compete with Taurus. They had one of each at Gryphon so you could compare. Taurus had less cutting clearance, ran noisier, and blades cost twice as much. Gryphon raised blade prices 30% several years ago so I don't know if that is still the case.
