Hi everyone,
I have a set of 6 inch Crystalite lap discs. They are the ones that have a 10mm thick metal base and then a 1mm or less thick surface that has the diamond grit. The discs I have are fairly worn out. I have 2 questions.
1. Can the thin top lay be removed and replaced? The are original Crystalite discs as far as I can tell, not just a metal disc with a PSA topper. If it can be removed, how do you do it? Soak the disc in acetone or something?
2. Would I be able to buy one of those 1 mm thick lapping disc that are meant to be affixed to a metal disc and just stick it on top of the existing disc? I know the surface might not end up being perfectly flat, but I'd be using these discs to flatten and polish the backs of cabs, not for faceting so I think a little bit of imperfections would not be an issue.
As a bonus question, assuming #2 is a option, where is a good place to get the thin lapping discs? I see lots of them for sale on ebay for around $10, but I wonder how long they would really last?
Thanks, Herb
