I just got my Poly put back together, since I bought it-got rid of the bump wheels and replaced it with expando wheels.... Question,I'm teaching myself to run the machine... The left wheel holds the sandpaper on the wheel pretty good, but the right side, kicks it off, left and or right....All the paper is 8 inch,as are the wheels..........As soon as the stone touches the paper-boom-its heads off the wheel!!!!!!!!! Am I doing something wrong or what!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is it turning the correct direction?

That would be my first guess. If the expando is on backwards it won't expand. If it's a lortone there's an arrow, but hard to see because it's small.

Also it needs to be spinning at 1700 rpm +/- to expand. if spinning too slow it might slip too.

Been watching this all along, but the answer was covered quickly.
One other possibility (for future knowledge) is when a drum gets old it can lose it's expandability (is that a word?) - anyway, they can basically wear out. You can buy an old used drum and it may not expand anymore. Really old ones look like dry rotted tires, buy they quit expanding well before that point.

Found the problem,it was the sandpaper I bought, sub standard crap-never do that again!!!!!!!!! Just did all my free forms on my cabbing machine and the presanding too........... Might as well get rid of the Poly and invest in a vibrating flat lap......Makes better sense than having two of the same...When the cabbing machine can do the same and more than the Poly....

Just to round out the total array of factors that will cause a belt to creep laterally, I'd always check to see if your machine is level (especially if the belt tends to creep one way only). Leveling the machine can prevent that, but a good belt should not move off the wheel unless radically off the level. Always try a new belt to see if it does the same thing. Keep on grinding. Tom

Tom Yes,tried different belts-most stayed on,but some did the dance.....Will check to see how level it is on the stand-But in all seriousness,it's still going down the road....Why have to pieces of equipment that do the same work, plus my cabbing machine does a bit more...LOL I know the "Poly" is in great shape,I tore it apart and looked it all over and changed the rounds out too...Rebuilt the stand, painted and put back together...

I stopped selling Raytech drums because of inconsistent diameters. Sometimes off by 1/4". You can look from the side and see which direction they need to turn to expand. The wrong way the "fingers" will lay down. The correct way centrifugal force throws them outwards. I had a really experienced customer that bought new drums from me to replace some 20 year old drums. He called to tell me for 20 years he cursed the "stupid drums" for not holding the belts tight. When he saw the arrows on the new drums he realized he ran the old drums backwards all those years.

The Lortone (Scott Murray) expandos are the best, made in the USA. I have done repair and maintenance work on the molds. I have worked with the people in Oregon who compound the rubber used to make them.
