It all started this summer with my brother and his daughter finding a piece of Larvikite near the birthplace of our mother’s mother in the south of Norway. They brought it home and then sent it to me to be slabbed and cabbed. I then mailed it on down to Don of DLC Gems ( you may recall he helped me with another special project about a year ago…) to be wrapped oh so finely. Arriving today this elegant piece awaits my mother’s 80th birthday next week. Many thanks Don, your talents are top shelf…..Cheers. Edit: Don has a better photo of it on his etsy site. the rough, off the trim saw and the preform...

FYI...Larvikite is an igneous rock known for having large feldspar crystals that give off a great silver blue schiller effect…similar to labradorite. It is mined commercially near Larvik Norway and marketed in Europe as “Blue Granite”.
It was fairly easy to work and took a great polish, but with just the small amount I had to work with what I had and make due to capture the best available labradorescence… The unfortunately I ground through the sheen in some places, but it still has some flash - with the right light from the right angles…. If you ever play with this - I suggest you be very conservative on the grind and polish to preserve that killer flash.
The metaphysical properties for Larvikite are said to be…"good for renewing and maintaining vitality and youthfulness, as well as brain maintenance and healing.” Good stuff for an octogenarian. …Cheers

What a great collaborative piece. What do they say, it takes a village to make Mom a special present.

Beautiful piece of Larvikite and awesome wrap! My grandparents are from southern Norway as well, but on the other side of Oslofjord in Halden. I've never made it to Larvik, but next time I'm there, I'm going to have to make it a point to put it on the itinerary!
