I am playing with making a cab out of part of this slab and was thinking about something in the shape that I have drawn, or something to that effect. The slab is 2 1/2 inches wide or from top to bottom, not left to right I have made cabs in the past but never free forms. Any suggestions?

That's a very pretty slab. You can probably get more cabs out of it.
I prefer free forms and circles to other shapes. I don't have any suggestions.

Freeforms might be addictive...
I really like the shape you've drawn out, actually. I like how the points in the fortification barely intersect the edge - that gives the pattern a sense of coherence and unity despite the irregular shape.
Another idea could be incorporating the two tubes to the left. You might be able to make a face! The white blob to the further left almost looks like a hat.

I see what you mean about the face, never looked at it from that angle. I was thinking the tubes could be another cab. Indecision is the key to flexibility.

Here's a two-cab idea with a face. Arrows indicate which direction could be up.

Dont be afraid using the open tubes. They can be a wonderful addition to any master-cab. As with any cab, ensue some form of balance pleasing to you.

You identified the best scene in the slab and should use it even if it is the only preform you get. The problem I see with the framing is that the cab might have a clunky shape. I've cut a lot of those. I cut free forms and also use templates. I have quite a few and lay them over the slab to design. I would use a large pear shape with orientation the same as yours and center the scene.

What Mike said, your eyes will pick out the best scene and shape. I prefer free form to calibrated cabs any day! That way you can maximize the final cab size, by not having to fit a constrained shape/size.
I do love the alien! Might say I have a soft spot for them.

My only advice would be to turn the slab over and really pay attention to how the pattern tapers off (or not) between the two sides. Sometimes when you start grinding down through it the pattern really changes. You might need to offset your original outline a little to account for this.
