I just purchased some rough that was marked 'ruby in green matrix'. The green matrix fluoresces deep purple under LW UV. What will ruby occur with? Any ideas as to what the matrix might be?

Chances are you are dealing with ruby zoizite. You can google it for photos and description. Tom

Neither zoisite nor fuschite, which I have seen with ruby, are fluorescent. So, I think this is something else.

I have Ruby in Zoisite. Under LW, the Ruby is brilliant red and the Zoisite reflects back unfiltered light from black-light-blue (BLB) bulb. Are you sure that the deep purple from the green matrix isn't simply reflected light from the bulb?
If you Google search "ruby in zoisite UV" you will see images of brilliant red ruby and reflected purple light from the BLB bulb.
If you are sure that it is not Zoisite, follow-up with a natural light photo of your specimen. I am curious.
Darryl.

This is the best I can do. The purple is actually deeper than it appears here and there isn't any ruby on this side because this was picked to show the fluorescence

Wow, that is a nice looking rock, doesn't look like any ruby in zoisite that I have ever seen before. I'm not seeing the green matrix. what color does it fluoresce?

The picture is of the rock under UV correct? Post a picture in natural lighting.

KD The pink you are seeing is the green matrix fluorescing. That side had little visible ruby. Some of the green matrix didn't fluoresce. You can see that at the bottom. Yes. it LW UV.

I just don't have the proper camera for this. Shooting with or without the flash just doesn't show it like I'm seeing it. The ruby fluoresces red as expected and the matrix is a deep purple. It's really pretty. The flash washes it out and without the flash the fluorescence doesn't show.

I would guess ruby in weathered fuschite. It's not green enough for fuschite that's why the weathered comment. Ruby as any corundum is usually found in gneiss. I've seen some similar parent rock on corundum but the corundum was dark blue to black. That's a really cool piece and I'll be watching to see what others think.

I'm going to tumble it. Got 3 lbs. of it at $4.48 per lb. (+ S/H). I think I got a deal. I'll revive this thread & post some pics after some of it is done.
