In 1988 I had a job in South Dakota. There was nothing to do there except hunt for rocks. Lots of agate around and even more pet wood. I also found a lot of prehistoric artifacts but I didn't collect them. I heard about some black skin agates near Rapid city and was lucky enough to find this one. The local rock shop owners couldn't believe I was lucky enough to find it. I remember being caught in a rainstorm that turned the local soils to glue. I lost a shoe to the gumbo shortly after finding this agate. This is what I saw when I found it. Definetly agate but there is a lot of similar material in the area. When I turned it over, this is what I saw. It's completely black on the outside with translucent agate under the skin. One of the purest whites I've see in an agate in the center. It's one of my most rewarding finds ever.

Nice find Brent. I have a few smaller black skins in my collection. Did ya find any Fairburns ?
Gotta love that gumbo mud. That stuff swallows pickup trucks. You were lucky that you only lost a shoe. LOL

Reminds me of the black agate I've picked up over near Marfa. But that is one cool specimen, Starguy! It has a lot going on! For a moment I thought you had made it into a keychain with your keys in that pic. Not a bad idea.....hmmmm... ~Roland

Is the center agate or opalite?
