I have two projects in mind:
1) Hand-sanding works so much better on fairly soft stones. I've been working this lace agate for on-and-off two weeks with very slow progress. Does anyone have preformed cabochons of fairly soft (Mohs 6 and below) stones that they want to get rid of? I'm looking for ones that have been domed on the 80 grit.
2) I have the nubbin of an idea for a project that uses transmitted light. For that, I'm seeking cabs (preformed or finished) that are too dark to see the color or patterns in reflected light, but are visible when slightly backlit. Some examples would be dark almandine garnet or plume agate cut too thick.
Thanks!

What is your time frame for this project? how many "soft" cab preforms? size and shapes of cabs? I have a couple materials in mind that are soft but take a decent shine. I have slabs of this material that was sold as "snake print" out of Tennessee I also have some slabs of Kona dolomite from Michigan that would be simple to work by hand Chuck

micellular - I'd take him up on that dolomite. It polishes up like nobody's business, yet is soft as butter. Gorgeous stuff. Do you have a trim saw? I was just wondering- I have lots of preforms that are cut close but not precisely. If I can find some to fit your light project, could you use them?

For the Soft project, I'd like them ASAP (ideally before Xmas so I can work during my vacation in Washington), but otherwise continuous because I can hand-sand at work while I read papers Drummond Island Rocks, that dolomite looks absolutely gorgeous (your composition is sweet as cotton candy) and it's in a nice hardness range. Thank you for the response! Will you pm me details? rockjunquie, the Light project is for a fair in mid-January, so I'll have access to the club trim saw by then. I'm really excited about this project (which is mostly not-rock-related) but it does involve a lot of things I'm not familiar with. Here's hoping!
