Anywhere from Chicago to Michigan City... Are there any good rock hounding beaches there? I have heard about the Crinoides and fossils, I have a few.. But rocks? Any good rockhoudning beaches?

Somebody just told me there was an agate beach about 30 miles east of Chicago. Does anybody know what beach that is?

I'm in Michigan on Lake Huron. I've driven across the state to look for Petoskey stones, but I have never been to your side of the lake. I didn't realize that there were agates in Lake Michigan. I look for agates in Lake Superior.

Not sure if that agate beach was true... Somebody told me that who doesn't know a ton of rocks... So he might have just been talking about a random beach with cool rocks. Though I believe the part where he says there is a TON of rocks at that beach.

There's no ice yet, so get out there and get a report for us. Take lots of pictures.

Hello and welcome. "UP" here in WI. Lake Michigan will yield agates (Lakers) that were dragged down by the Glaciers (they are LSA Lake Superior Agates, but you can't call them that because you did not find them in (around) Lake Superior) .. Not sure of any specific locations on Lake Michigan but they are out there. There is also suppose to be good geode hunting in central IN. I am a newbie so most of my information can (and will be) corrected as needed. Happy hounding.

Yes jackangeline, a friend used to fill his boat with those geodes. He sold them out of his rock shop; they are nice(and can be very large).

The "agate beach" near Chicago is at Zion, the state park manager there claims the gravel at that location is full of them. I grew up going to that beach and bringing rocks home from there, the beach is very gravel-y pea gravel sized rocks as far as you can wade in places. never noticed any agates, but in those days i was into fossils... many people have questioned his statement on a couple of other forums, but a few people have backed him up. Not very far from Chicago, probably worth checking it out for your own satisfaction. I saw a link not long ago, will see if i can find it.

Hello
Thanks for that Snowmom. I was on a long Christmas family visit, before Christmas. Just returned yesterday.. I will check it out in the spring. The ice will push up any rocks, and, other things. Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have a drivers license yet, so my dad would have to drive me. He's the only one who respects my rockhounding hobby, therefore I'm sur he'd like to drive me, if he has the time. Thanks, RJBud1
