Hello All,
I am brand new to the forum and very new to rockhounding. I plan on cabbing in the near future and hopefully metal smithing soon there after. Anywho, I made my first trip to the Santa Monica Mountains and I need help identifying what I found. Hopefully some of you will check this thread out and identify what I found on my first hunt! So... here is what I found doing surface picks.

Okay so there is a learning curve with posting photos. Sorry! Here we go: Travertine? Jasper? ?? ?? ?? Much greener than the picture shows ?? ?? ?? Jasper again? ?? ?? ?? ?? Thanks for your help. Ideally I will find better specimens next trip out.

That last pic looks like a vein of uncolored chalcedony running through the host rock which may be andesite or some such volcanic material...Mel

Thank you, Mel! That is my favorite find and I probably walked past it 3 times. Do you see any cab value in the others? Am I correct in calling out the jasper?

Two and seven look interesting-do you have a way to cut them or just window them??

Potter, I lived in Ventura county over thirty years before I moved to Texas. Don't be offended but most what you've found looks to be "leaverite" and not of cabbing quality. That being said, do not give up as the Santa Monicas do have excellent material including some very nice plume and sagenite. Check out Kanan Road. The rockier beaches to the north of you in Ventura county also have excellent jasper, whalebone, some agate etc. Not the greatest rockhounding region but not bad if you are persistent. Keep on looking and you'll find some nice cutting material.....Mel
