I have been so busy the last couple months cabbing and wrapping things to fill orders or stock etsy that I have not had much chance to sit down and work on stuff purely for pleasure so that was my goal yesterday. The rock I chose was a lone survivor from a tumble batch we worked on 4 years ago. The material is Yellowstone ashflow jasper. My son received an 8 pound chunk of the material as gift from a fellow rock club member and at the time we had just started tumbling and did not even know what a cabochon was so we unknowingly crushed the whole piece down to tumble size. Obviously looking back it should have all been slabbed and cabbed. Over the years all of the tumbles have disappeared but I did find one small piece of the rough that never got tumbled and was able to make two cabs from it. I gave one to my son to hold onto and wrapped one. the small flecks are pyrite and the agate varies from cloudy to completely clear in areas These are pictures from my tumble post four years ago. This was our second tumble batch ever. Thanks for looking Chuck

What part of the Yellowstone River did they find this jasper? That is some awesome jasper............ Cant help you out with that one. The original owner has passed on. In the picture below you can see it had a tag with the I.D. and that is all I have to go on. This picture was after the first couple whacks with the sledge. You can see on the upper right hand piece what the outer crust looked like. Chuck

looks more like a agate or maybe a limb casts but very nice pattern I agree it is agate but there was a piece of really old piece of tape on it that could barely be read that said yellowstone ashflow jasper and there was a printed label that said the same. I do not collect much of the rock I use which leaves me at the mercy of the previous owner for identification. I sure wish I knew for sure what this was and if more was available. Chuck

Beautiful cab. I believe this material is dug on a ranch near the south entrance to the park.

Awesome cab Drummond Island Rocks ....Lots of different varieties of jasper and agate in the greater yellowstone area. My first assumption was that this was agatized limbcast material from the ashflows just north of the park - commonly referred to as Tom Miner Basin, but the area extends well beyond that one drainage. Below are a few photos for your reference. However, grayfingers knows his local rocks so I would assume he has your material pegged with its provenance being south of the park. Cheers a chunk - faced and the rind Close-ups of a couple of slabs (looks like petrified seafoam....)

As bsky4463 showed, there is material of this type in Tom Miner also. But unless this is 'old stock' it is more likely from the southern border of Yellowstone, as in recent times Tom Miner requires a free permit to collect, and one is only allowed a small sample at a time, not to exceed 20 cubic inches per person, per year. A lot of this material was collected between 1960 and 1970 in an area some 30 miles north of Dubois, Wyoming close to the southern border of Yellowstone. I believe it is now on a private ranch and is still being dug for sale. www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/wyoming-yellowstone-ashflow-jasper-110489739
