Cherokee county is a garnet county. Add Cobb, Paulding and many mountain counties. those are above average crystal formations, well done.

Thanks. There are many more to come. The other day I found a deposit that is under a lake for most of the year. It is only acceptable during the winter months. As soon as this rain clears out I'm going back.

Wow. Those garnets are cool, but so are the shiny sulfides you found them in. Looks like chalcopyrite from here. Cool finds.

Welcome to RTH, erik88, from Trap county, I mean Troup county, Georgia! Thanks for sharing pics of your homegrown garnets. Enjoyed checking them out in this post and your introduction post. Will you be hosting a field trip in your back yard any time this winter? Just kidding. The conjoined garnet xtals are pretty darned cool! jamesp knows of a couple of other sweet spots to find garnets in Georgia, and broseph82 in 'Bama. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/64597/rainbow-color-garnet-mineral-collection?page=2I collect the garnet family (minerals and gemstones) like a crazy woman.

Those are just fantastic. I really like the twin. I think I love rough garnets more than faceted. I rockhound everywhere I go. Found a small bit of gold vein in quartz in my next door neighbor's yard, turquoise in another.... Waiting at the doctor's office.... Walking my dog.... Most businesses here have rock/desert gardens and I rockhound while I wait. Have found some great stuff. Not on your level of course.

Above average garnets in terms of size and crystal formation you have there Erik. washingtonrocks mentioned the sulfide base stone. Below the dam at Lake Wedowee in Alabama is some green schist. It is sprinkled with small garnet crystals. Water worn, fine grained, glitters, and is delightful in color. It is a broad vein that the river cut through. Specimen grade plates, very showy. Another spot is at Rottenwood Creek Park under the steel walking trail bridge at intersection of I-75 and I-285. The creek cut gorge thru a hill of garnet laden schist.

be careful when hunting garnets... you could step in schist and that woudn't be gniess.
Sorry I just had to say it.
