So I am digging though and sorting a bag of random stone from Ebay I got to go with the rock tumbler for christmas, I'm working on identifying much of the rock I don't recognize, however, There is one I couldn't figure out that didn't really look that impressive then on a guess I fired up the UV LW light and well, this was intresting, anyone else have any ideas on what this is? Depending on the section MOHS is 4-6.

This looks like pieces of septarian nodules to me. I don't know diddly about the UV though.

Good call on the septarian John!
Septarian fluoresces (is that a word?) like all get out.

Keep a close eye on it if you tumble it celticraven, you have a few different hardnesses in those pieces. Kinda easy to undercut.

Septarian is exactly what they are. They are from Utah and Madagascar. The tumble you have is most likely from the latter. great stuff
the Yellow is Calcite the Brown is Aragonite the Gray is Bentonite (Clay)
be careful when you tumble .... in the rotary is move quick ... if you are not careful it will be just little bits in a couple of days. I rotated mine for lest then 24hrs and is was well rounded.

Wow, I was just cleaning off my bench this morning & had some pieces very similar to yours. They won't tumble too well, so don't expect much. Lots of different hardnesses among the different materials. Lynn

Can someone tell me how to tag someone? Jack? in the first stage 24 hours? or all of them? I did mine in the rotary for the first stage only. the rest were done in the vibe. it is soft I started with 80... I would start with your 2nd stage grit and keep a close eye on it.

Definitely broken up Septarian nodule, the calcite is the material that is fluorescing. Probably not the best material to be tumbling due to the extreme differences in hardness. Will undercut all to hell
Cheers Scott

Can someone tell me how to tag someone? Put the @ sign before the name. No space between.

They look wonderful! celticraven, I put them in my rotary with 80 grit (24hr) they are soft and grind quick. then to the vibe with 220 for 1-2 days (rinse every 24) then 400 in the vibe for 24hr, 1000 grit 24hr, then thoroughly dry then for polish I use dry corncob and Aluminum Oxide polish (did this until I was happy 48hrs)
