I bought a kilo of premium Lapis from an acquaintance a few years ago who is from Afghanistan. He brought it over years ago when the turmoil was just starting up. He said when the Taliban took over the mine they started blasting the material out to get more to market because they are desperate for money to support their war efforts. He said all the material coming out of the country over the last few years has minute fractures throughout the material thus making it nearly worthless as a lapidary material.
