I decided to make something for myself, and have always wanted to have a jade pen. I have made one of these kits before with stone, and it was pretty fun. This time through I thought i would document the process along with the lessons I learned from last time. Here is the starting material: one pen kit from the local woodcraft store, a little jade block from ebay, and some drill bits also from ebay. 1st step is drilling. It is better to start with a blank with parallel sides. This will help to keep things square later. The hole cant have any defects or the brass sleeve wont fit. This means that it it better to drill from only one side. So, I drilled to a depth that matches the length of the brass tube from the pen kit. then I cut the blank from the block, but am sure to cut it long, and grind back. Here I am almost through to the bottom of the hole. Go slow. If done right, this side of the hole opening will be exactly perpendicular to the hole. this leaves you with a drilled blank that fits the brass tube from the pen kit one blank cut, one to go. Then they have to be shaped and polished. More to follow, stay tuned.

Thanks everyone. I did a little more work on the pen today. 2nd blank drilled. Here is a view of the other side just before grinding enough to expose the hole. and the drilled blank next step is to rough out the shape. This is off the 80 grit wheel next step is to shape the second blank. Thanks for looking

ok I put in the rest of the time on the pen today. Finished rough shaping the other blank and glued the brass tubes inside them with epoxy. Each pen kit has a set of bushings you can buy separate. They step down the exact same amount at the actual pen kit Now on to the 220 hard wheel where I slowly shape down till the edges are flush with the bushings repeat for other blank, and shape as desired. This makes the jade layer quite this so you have to be careful from there I moved through the soft wheels to 3000, the polish was acceptable, so I stopped. If this was any other stone I would have taken it further, but if this orange peeled, there is not enough material to regrind. final step is to press the pen together following the instructions. I just use a bench clamp. The finished pen. Thanks for looking

Really nice work! Thanks for sharing. Where did you find the kit used? unclesoska I got these from my local woodcraft store, endless variety in styles. Picked this one because it required the shallowest drilling.
