Hello, friends! A few days ago an idea popped into my mind: to build ... guess what? Another knife.  This time, my plan was to make a knife in the ancient Greek style. Searching the internet, I chose the "Kopis" knife. My inspiring photos were the following two ones:   While searching about this type of knife, I noticed that some of the handles have the rear end shaped as an animal head: goose, dog or horse. I decided to choose the horse so I drew the following template:  As you see, the handle is more complex and it's going to have three bolsters instead of the usual two ones. I plan to fill the space between the bolsters with pet wood from Lesvos Island and maybe also with some olive wood I have from there. I transfered the pattern on the stainless steel sheet (5 mm thick):  Then I gross cut the shape, using a small angle grinder; Ina was brave enough to sit there and fix the knife while I did the cutting.   Then, with some drilling, some grinding and a lot of file work, I brought the knife close to its final contour, as you see here:  The overall length of the knife is 40 cm and the blade length is 23 cm. Adrian you are a VERY ambitious artist to work with stainless steel that thick!That is a LOT of work to cut,file and shape that knife by hand and even using a small grinder for the rough cut!!!
I look forward to seeing you work on this knife!

Do you utilize a belt grinder or to you shape using hand methods?

Thank you everyone! Do you utilize a belt grinder or to you shape using hand methods? Scott, I do most of the work with files but I firstly do some grinding using the small angle grinder I have. I didn't build any belt grinder. Adrian |

What do you call the curly q design in the meat of the blade?
are you going to hollow that out, etch it or something.... ?

Thank you for the link, Staguy. Hi Adrian What do you call the curly q design in the meat of the blade? are you going to hollow that out, etch it or something.... ? Ed, that is meant to be a Greek pattern for the waves. I'd like to hollow it out and maybe insert copper instead, or leave it as it is (hollow). Adrian |

Hello again. Here are some more photos during the recent work I did these days. The photos would also answer to the questions about how do I shape the edge. So, I firstly rough grind with an angle grinder:   Then using a jig which keeps an even slope, I file what's left after grinding:   This way, the edge is completely shaped, as you see here:  For sanding the edge, I use the same jig but this time I remove the file and use sand paper instead:   I also did the sanding the rest of the blade, using the tool you see below. It's not meant for such opperation, but it did work pretty well for the first step of the sanding process:   In this last pic, the blade sits on the sander just the same I held it against it by hand while the belt was running. That would be all for now. The next step is polishing the blade and I also plan to do some file work on the spine of the knife (on the handle for sure, and maybe also on the blade). Do you have any idea what comes first: filework or blade polishing? I'd rather polish it firstly, because otherwise the sand paper I use for polish would stuck into the filework notches.
