Looking over various crystal websites, I see a lot of things like "Mazanecite helps with astral projection" or Cenazamite empowers your will to lose weight". Are these "real" (not physically, I know that is placebo)? That is, are they authentic ancient traditions? Or are they just made up in the last few decades?

I can't answer your question about origins, but I get a lot of people asking me "what powers does this rock have?".
I reply "As far as I'm concerned, only the power to take money out of your wallet and put it in mine."

If it's a big enough rock & somebody hits you in the head with it, it has the power to knock you out.

When the big push for hardhats everywhere all the time came at work, the boss said "If a rock falls two feet and hits a person on the head, it could break it." I couldn't resist asking if he was referring to the persons head or the rock.

No there are energy in rock. God made em all. Crystals spark with lite when shsken. Obsidian when smoothed and laid out in the sun to get warm is comforting when rubbed on a arthritic joint. If it works it doesn't matter if it's placebo, real or whatever as long as it "works"!

I was into the whole "crystal healing" thing for a while. One thing that struck me was that different cultures had very similar properties assigned to like stones. To me that points to a common origin. Possibly even common observed effect.
As to the actual effect, if any, I can't say. I wouldn't use them as a substitute for professional medical care. However if you are say having stomach issues why not carry a stone said to help with such things.

Fad it is certainly not. Reputed properties of stones go back to pretty much the beginning of recorded history. Real or not? Lots of people swear on the truth in it, and lots of people died in vain. The only thing I would swear by is that I get a headache every time I spend more than a couple of hours in crystal-markets looking around, and that there are (in retro-respect)such things as dream-stones. But reading up on them, does/did not yield a reference to the things previously experienced (repeatedly in order to get noticed in the first place). Over the years, any intentional use of crystals or stones, did not result in desired/stated effect. Not even once.

I'm often asked "what is the metaphysical property of this stone?" I answer that "it's beautiful & makes me feel good".
I sometimes joke that "it's a chick magnet. Old ladies walk up to me in Walmart & admire & comment on it all the time". Lynn

As for traditions and legends around rocks, many of them are ancient. For instance, Amethyst keeping you sober, or Tiger Eye leading you into battle go back to Roman times. The legend of Apache Tears goes back to the early settlement of the west and the re-settlement of native Americans onto reservations. You can GOOGLE it all.
Personally, I don't believe in any of the meta-physical beliefs around rocks, but I enjoy a good story now an then.
Darryl.

Why did priests of renown wear amethysts and other such stones? They weren't crazy. Each stone has a certain effect. Just like each flavor has a certain effect on our tongue.

People like to mock what they do not understand.
Can crystals heal? Why not. Ever hear of the physics principle the piezoelectric effect? Same principle used to time quartz watches. Quartz exposed to pressure or an electrical field will create its own electricity with a frequency of 7.83hz, same as the body's primary frequency. The skin gives off electricity and so can stimulate the piezoelectric effect of quartz.
Magnetic therapy is also considered quackery by some yet there is also a physics principle behind this also known as magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). In short the principle here is that a conductive fluid, in this case blood, going through a magnetic field will produce electricity again at a frequency of 7.83hz.
The body is electric and it responds to electricity. It has been known for a long time that mild electricity applied to fractures speeds the healing process. And I used high voltage through a gas tube to grow back the end of my thumb when I cut it off in a table saw accident even though it is supposed to be impossible.
There are even studies that have been done showing the power of prayer, which again is just another form of energy.
Bottom line is that we do not know everything, which is why things are still being discovered. And just because we don't fully understand things this does not mean it is not real.

I don't know much about it, but my clients tell me about their experiences with certain stones and they believe it. Far be it for me to tell me that they are wrong. I'm delighted that something I made (with help from the good earth) makes them feel better.
Lithium bearing stones help with depression. Lithium is given for depression- yes, severe depression and mania, but what if trace amounts help with mild depression? Not such a stretch as far as I can tell.

When I started making rocking hearts one original ideas was to use the “Book of Stones” as guide to make healing hearts. What’s neat about the book is the authors pair up complimentary stones. So if I was making a heart for a certain ailment I could reference the other complimentary stone to make the heart. I should go back to incorporating that idea more…mostly The thing is though --I don’t want to overemphasis that aspects of the rock hearts healing power. I don’t want to lead anyone astray. For me-- if I get sharp pain in the chest the first thing I’ll probably do is go to a doctor. Not put on a healing heart. But that would probably be the second thing I would do. ha ha
