I read in another thread that Montana agates are originally wood?

Lots of agatized wood in Montana. It looks like your piece was partially rotted away before agatization started. Very nice shelf specimen.

There are several types of agates found in Montana. Many have nothing to do with wood replacement. The famous Montana moss agate is just one of the "other types".
