Walt, I'm 99.9% sure that's not Kona dolomite. Do you know where it came from? Kona only comes from Marquette.
It looks like feldspar to me. Is the gold stuff mica or pyrite? If it's mica, that might be pegmatite. I found some pegmatite that looks similar to that in the U.P.. Pegmatite is just large crystal granite.

I was going to add that Rob and Chuck are our resident Michigan rock experts, but I was typing lazy. One of them recently posted a really nice Kona dolomite cab, don't recall which guy made it, but probably easy enough to find. Her Rob, looking at those eBay listings of Kona dolomite, why is it so expensive? Like 10 bucks plus a pound. < font = curious >

There's a quarry up there that sells it. You drive in and they weigh your car. They weigh again on the way out. The first time I went there, I got about 350 lbs. I was a little worried about the price. I think it ended up costing $2.65. That being said, you do have to search the pile pretty well to get nice stuff. There's quite a variety of colors: pink, purple, cream, red. I think the purple isn't as desirable. It's also only available from Marquette, so people can't sell it from various sources. If you want some, I can't get it for you for less than $10 a pound. Probably around $9.00.

Here's a large piece of Kona that I really like. It really shows the variety of colors pretty well. I took a quick picture with my iPad, so I don't know if the quality of the picture is good enough for you to appreciate it. I prefer the part on the right side. There's a bunch of quartz in the middle.

Thanks for the schoolin' Rob. Found the thread with the Kona Dolomite cab, it was yours after all. Nice cab(s)! Does it shine up or is a matte finish what ya can get from this material?

It doesn't shine like an agate, but I'd say it's better than a matte finish. It's very soft. That cab is from some of the nicer stuff I've collected.
