Spent the weekend mucking out my 18"; what fun; NOT! I've been using diesel fuel to cut for years, but I'm really tired of the odor and was wondering if anyone has had any experience with mineral oil?

That's all I use in my 10 inch saw...no problems with it. There is almost no odor at all....John

I use mineral oil in all my saws, have for many years. I like it and recycle as much as I can back out of the sludge.

One thing I like about is that it washes off your hands much easier that the smelly fuel that came with my used saw.
I also recommend making yourself a slab saw sludge sucker to make the cleaning job easier. There's a thread or two about it here somewhere. Lynn

When I drain my mineral oil from the saw,I just let the sludge and oil set for a month or so-oil is light,it will float to the top... Skim it off and bottle it,for future use....

I have a 5 gal bucket with about 50 holes drilled in it suspended inside of a 55 gal drum, I put one paper sack in it and fill it with sludge, the oil goes into the drum and when I need new oil I pump it out of the drum.

Anyone have any issues with mineral oil and highly porous rock? What I mean is how do you get ALL the oil out of the slab? Using Kitty litter and then Dawn but some slabs still feel 'oily'.

I pressure wash some of my thundereggs because of the oil getting into the cavities and etc....Than after that I just get a bucket of very "HOT" water with "Dawn" dish soap, and soak them for good day.... Than wash them in clean hot water again.... Same with Obsidian and a few other types of rock...

Some material needs to be soaked in TSP (trisodiumphosphate), (it works better if it is warmed up and it is highly corrosive so protect yourself from it,) You can buy it in powder form at most lumber yards for stripping wallpaper or cleaning walls before painting.

I got an oven I use after a soak in a degreaser solution. small toaster oven for small stuff like t- eggs and regular oven for large pieces. Love the mineral oil, switched to it in my 18 inch saw.
