A co-worker brought this to really cool Death Plate to me yesterday. Most people think my fascination with rocks is weird, but being the only rock-nerd in their lives pays dividends! It was found in Smithville, TX, (about 40 miles east of Austin). I am pretty sure this is Chert, based on knife test and the location it was found. It's about 15 inches long and weighs about 7 pounds. This should be in Sabre52 's wheelhouse. Anyway, thanks for looking!!! Jeremy Top Top Close-up Side View Bottom

That is, without a doubt, the coolest death plate I have seen from anywhere! Looks like it has a whole smorgasbord of critters in there. Snails, corals, sponges (swamp monsters!)...
Great find by your co-worker, and even better that you are the only "rock nerd" he knows. Nice gift!

Very cool.I have a similar but smaller one in my garden that came from the Rio gravels. Mine is just mainly Turritella like snails though and doesn't have a lot of the coral. Yours is much more interesting. It is chert and very hard stuff.....Mel
