I gave all my sandpainting material to our local rock shop many years ago and have lost my photos during computer updates, but I can still write about the process. 1. A taller backboard to hold your painting - Masonite etc. (could be canvas covered) 2. A piece of window glass the size of your finished painting. 3. a collection of desired same sized vari-colored sand. 4. an empty cereal box. 5. 4 spring clamps. Cut 1/4" strips of the cereal box and glue it to the sides and bottom of the glass. Spray the backboard with thinned Elmer's Glue and let all dry. Lay the window on the backboard with the cardboard forming a sand grain space between the two and use the clamps to hold them together with the back as high as possible. Pour sand in at the top. change colors, sometimes shake gently or hard to form the foreground at the bottom mid-ground and finally background. It is helpful to stop at stages when you really like how it looks and go to the next step, then go back and do more to the foreground etc. Lay flat, remove glass and spray with the glue mix. let dry. add detail layers on top, then glue finish.

Oh, I forgot to mention once you have the background you like, Work this time from the background to the foreground. You can dip a brush in Elmer's Glue and paint in limbs and leaves, then sprinkle on the colored sand you want. when it dries shake off the excess sand then go on to the next details.

Found a site where the kids can paint with sand, kinda like an etch-a-sketch, sorta . You can find it at : www.thisissand.comThe thing won't make beautiful art like this, but the little ones won't be filling the keyboard with grit !
