Didn't notice this until I was about to give it away to my mother in-law. Golden rutile sprays inside of purple amethyst. Didn't buy this cluster as so, so it was a neat find. I did see some inclusions (black) but then I cleaned up a piece and got real close to it and this is what I saw.

Sagenite in amethyst is one of my most favorite stones! That's a beauty!

Yes! Cacoxenite!! Couldn't think of the word. Thank you Pat, either someone deleted their post or you're having conversations with yourself again. Ha ha. Looked up Cacoxenite and sure enough that's what popped up.

I've drooled over lots of rutilated quartz, but have never seen it in amethyst until now. Keeper!

Close-up from a seven-pound chunk of amethyst loaded with these sprays. Cacoxenite can be found in many locations in Europe, southeast US, Pima County AZ. Here’s a few pics of similar sprays. I'm a little undecided on this one. When I first saw the posted image I immediately thought of cacoxenite (goethite) but the crystal structure didn't seem quite right to me. After some searching I learned that rutile has also been reported as an inclusion in crystalline amethyst quartz but not nearly as often as the iron minerals hematite or goethite -- it's iron that gives amethyst its lovely purple color after all. All I can say is that this piece is very beautiful and I love it though if I had to bet I'd put my money on cacoxenite. This is a double-sided pendant piece I cut from very pale amethyst that's loaded with typical cacoxenite inclusions. They often have an intertwined fan-shaped appearance but there are many variations. Pretty stuff.
