Okay kids, quit piling it on! Geez... (You can stop now, jamesp .) Glad you like the photos, though, even if they are on Flickr. No poppies in the desert that I am aware of. At least, not right here. I think you need to go to the Emerald City for the poppies - ha! (witches, ruby slippers, Toto, Yellow Brick Road) What did you think of the aliens at the end of the album? This is simply not right I agree, jamesp, it's not right. By now they should have found your business cards in the console and returned the craft to Georgia for you. Cockpit kind of reminds me of your kayak...makes sense, now.

That's it. I tried to look it up, but with the plant being 1,300 miles away, I was not even close.

We'll have California poppies later. California poppies Opium poppies There are California poppies around, but like Pat said, I don't think they are blooming yet. My dad has some in his yard, they are not even close yet, just leafy/lacey greenery.
James and @shotgunner, I think the wildflower display this year was a bit of a let down. I have seen the desert positively riotous with flowers in past years. At the ABSP headquarters, most of the plants they have around the area (planted there, being cared for) are mostly the perennials, including cacti. They make a better show for the visitors to get photos of, or even paint them.
Also most of the "annual wildflowers" are much smaller, and overshadowed by the larger perennials. Will see what other photos I can dredge up of them.

Beautiful flower selection!!! As for the Beavertail cactus,I walked into a patch of that, when I was about five years old (camping)... Not fun! Dad took a few hours of his fishing time to doctor me up-LOL...

James, you know the more you whine about it and carry on, the less inclined I am to ever use Flickr again. Just so you know... ( )
Here are pics of desert wildflowers blooming, taken over a span of years.
Desert verbena
This stuff is very common, will paint the landscape purple!
Desert sunflower
One year, they grew so thick they hampered our vision for rock picking!
Lucy liked them too
Desert lily
These do not come up from seed, but from a bulb waaaay down in the ground
A motley crue.
Don't know what they are, sorry for out of focus.
Tuberosa. This is most likely a perennial, has woody stems.
This one is really small less than an inch across.
I think this is a desert primrose
Hillsides full of brittle bush a agaves
Not in the desert, but on the way out at Easter one year. Lake Henshaw in the midground, left side.
So there you have it. Lots of small annuals, they don't amount to much separately. But when they are covering a large area, wow, the colors can be magnificent!
(watch it, James)

The motley crew. Purdiest flowers in the field. How deep is the desert lily bulb ? to moisture i reckon

jamesp, bulb probably two feet down? Most likely to get moisture, but also for protection from things that would like to take its hard earned moisture, and also eat it. The deeper it is buried, the less likely it will be dug up!
