Last Saturday, I took a day trip with my brother and sister out to Anza Borrego Desert State Park to see the wildflowers. We've had some pretty good rain here over the winter, so figured it would be a pretty good display. It was okay, but thought it would have been better.
Beavertail cactus

Getting ready! Would like to see this in a week or so, what a display it would be!
View from Park headquarters, Santa Rosa Mountains in the background
Brittlebush (encelia species, flowering plant in the sunflower family)
Indigo bush
Ocotillo, also at the headquarters
Ocotillo in bloom
Staghorn cholla, other cholla, desert sunflower
Drove south down S2 to Mountain Palm Springs. The temp was a pleasant 90 degrees, we hiked up into the canyon to see the palms.
Palms at Mountain Palm Springs, looking back down the canyon.
Surprise Grove panorama. This area maybe a half mile in. Some standing water under those palms, lots of bees buzzing!
If this wasn't enough photos for you, here's a link to the rest of the album.
Thanks for looking! Jean

Still looks a little dry compared to what I'm accustomed to. All the Surprise Grove needs is a camel, or two. Looks like a real oasis. Beautiful pictures, but seriously ... no rocks?
Darryl.

Ha ha, I did have my sister pull over once we were out of the park and we looked at rocks for maybe 15 minutes. I brought home just a couple... Okay, maybe ten. I did not have my rock bag, or my rock pick with me. It was meant to be just a wildflower observing expedition! Yeah, right.

Do perennials count as wildflowers? No annuals this year?
Thanks for the pix, on Flickr.

Are they wild? Are they flowers? Then yes, I guess so! In the desert, most annuals will flower anytime there is rain! I guess you can consider the perennials a bonus.

Thanks for the ride-along, the desert is beautiful, especially when in bloom. The alien service guy seems to have found a good niche industry, but I wonder how well his business is doing.

You're welcome, Larry. I know you always like taking trips with me. I had wondered who would be the first to ask about the alien saucer recovery, lol! I have seen these guys and their saucers in their "compound" along I-8 out at the In-Ko-Pah exit (road the "Desert Tower is on). The only time we passed by was either going to the desert (so didn't want to stop, obviously!), or coming back up the Mountain Springs grade heading home, so again, didn't want to stop.
These folks live out there on either USFS or BLM land, sorta like squatters. The live in old trailers, just off the road and off the grid. No buildings, just everything out in the weather. Made me think of the people that live out at Slab City. Lotta trash about, was kind of a dump. Didn't talk to anybody, but I could hear voices inside their trailers. It was cocktail time when we stopped by, so imagine they were occupied at the time.
The strange scarecrow-type props are in the drainage ditch between them and the freeway. Don't know what that's all about. A lot of illegal (human) aliens pass through there, it is not very far from the Mexican border. Perhaps they are messing with them? Or maybe with the Border Patrol that chases them through there? They had a couple jars set up for you to leave them tips, guessing that is what they subsist on. Maybe they are well paid by the aliens?? In gold would be nice...

No poppies ?!? That's the darndest set of cacti blooms in one place ever. Nothing richer than the color of cactus blooms. Seems like the dry ground makes those killer colors. Jellyous that you guys get to play in the desert. Rocks and plants, beautiful flickr photos.

Okay kids, quit piling it on! Geez... (You can stop now, jamesp.) Glad you like the photos, though, even if they are on Flickr. No poppies in the desert that I am aware of. At least, not right here. I think you need to go to the Emerald City for the poppies - ha! (witches, ruby slippers, Toto, Yellow Brick Road) What did you think of the aliens at the end of the album?

Agree with James --- simply not right. Owners have been reading too many comic books. Seems to me that you, Jean, have a couple of darling aliens in your front yard!
