This is the first video is at noon with poor lighting. water and rocks:
Don't care for clanking rocks so I added 2 cups of clay. This time the sun was lower shedding light on the action so it could be observed. Note acceleration in back layer of rocks. And slow movement of rocks toward front close to opening. Looks like a lot of shear from front to back. Shape of barrel is so complicated that one would dare guess what is going on. The Viking company seemed to do a lot of emphasis on design.
Note sliding action caused by clay verses rolling action in water. Rolling rocks do not grind as fast as sliding rocks.

I like that you can watch a rotary

The new ones that are made by barranca diamond remind me of that old viking design. What RPM is the viking barrel turning at? My Slik brand incline is turning at 42. I'll try to get a video this weekend www.barrancadiamond.com/lap/plm_br6.htmlChuck

Looks like 4 turns per 12 seconds Chuck. About 20 RPM.
3 sides of that barrel has three planes and the other 3 sides have four planes. Not sure why. Someone went to great extremes in the rhomboidal trapezoidal tetrahedron department.
The pot in the second photo is an 8" X 5" tall mum pot. That drum' must be 10-11 inches across. I suppose that dictates RPM.
Looking forward to the Slik in operation.

Looks like it imparts a "start stop action" where the tumbles slow down and speed up.

I see it has a convenient handle.

Looks like the clay sure makes a positive difference. How hard to wash it out?

Looks like it imparts a "start stop action" where the tumbles slow down and speed up. Good eye. Mechanical impulses at 3 per revolution Scott. 20 RPM with 3 ramps and 3 catchments. Six sides total. It would be interesting to find out the designer's thoughts on this design. So many angles and a lot of effort placed on the shape.

Looks like the clay sure makes a positive difference. How hard to wash it out? The clay here is simply eroded granite Larry. It can be 20% felspar and 80% quartz to 20% quartz to 80% felspar. 1%-8% iron oxide/iron something It is no different than most quartz slurries. It is exactly like the slurry from tumbling granite. The whiter clay is often highest in felspar which is high in aluminum oxides and other aluminum compounds. Washes of just like most slurries. The iron color does not stain for some reason. Tumbling the coral is more of a calcium carbonate slurry since there is so much soft limestone to be ground off of it. If you threw a pound of soapstone in with every 8 pounds of say agate you would quickly have a soapstone slurry. There is as many slurry compounds as there is rock compositions to tumble. The action of that tumbler would break down SiC 30 to less than 220 quickly, guessing 3-4 days. (tumbling hard quartz minerals) It is all in the cohesive/suction forces of the slurry that causes the sliding action maximizing grinding. Listen to the two carefully and you can hear the sliding and grinding with the clay. The clay will not allow the rocks to roll over each other so easily.

Now I want one... but my wife would not be pleased to hear that in the garage; she already dislikes the sound from the vibe.

That thing is outstanding - art and engineering in motion. Now I'm looking out for one.
