Hi Y'all,
My sons, ages 14, 9, and 9, and I have been rock hunting for some time now, and we're just now getting into tumbling.
I'm looking forward to learning tips and tricks that'll help us get the most out of the minerals we've found so far.

You've found the right place. A lot of us start off using our kids as an excuse. You can buy a lot more stuff if it's for the kids' education.

That's below north Alabama...I try to explain things for folks from Georgia but I normally also have to draw a picture for folks from Florida (reading skills/comprehension, and all that down that way).<grin> Good activity for you and the boys to do together!!! Which tumbler are ya'll working with? Lastly, I've got a question....where'd ya go?

Which tumbler are ya'll working with? Lastly, I've got a question....where'd ya go? We bought a Thumler's A-R2, and we're currently tumbling pyrite, since the boys have collected so much of it. I've heard its kind of ambitious to start with softer rocks, since we don't really know what we're doing, but I figure it would be better to cut our teeth on something that we have a lot of, instead of using the quartz, amethyst, or garnets that we've found. As for your question, are you referring to where do we go hunting, or the fact that I haven't been on the forum for a week? If its the first, we live in Cumming, which is about 45 minutes south of some good little foothills where there are lots of nice rocks to find. We're big time hikers, and have been all over in the triangle area that goes from Cumming, to Ellijay, to Clayton, and my boys would always collect nice looking rocks during our hikes. The boys really got addicted to it when we did some gold mine tours in Dahlonega, GA, and did some gem grubbing, and now we kind of know how to identify good tumbling material based off of what we've found on this forum.

AR2...good tumbler. Are you going to save a barrel for "polish only"? Well, I was wondering where you had disappeared to, but it sounds like your rockhounding area is a good one. Yep, boys (young ones and old ones) have a thing about picking up rocks...some girls, too! You'll really enjoy tumbling. I can see a Lot-O in ya'lls future. Best wishes.
