Can you give us more info? Specific gravity? How did you arrive at "about mohs 6"? Where on this earhth was the rock found?

@shotgunner I guessed the hardness just from cabbing the material. It is not very hard to shape but is not soft and take a matt finish. Found it at a garage sale and they had no clue either.

I remember seeing an elephant carved of this stuff presented on another forum for ID, we were able to figure out that it came from india ( the carving).Looked like soapstone but the owner said it was a little harder. maybe that would give you a region of the world to search for matches.

So less than mohs 5. Could be marble or magnesite? Could be a ton of stuff.
