I got into rock tumbling on 1/19/16 of this year with a lot o tumbler vibratory tumbler. Then on 2/1/16 I bought a harbour freight chicago tools 6 pound rotary tumbler. My power bill for feb was normal which is around 240$. But then this month it was double that, over 480$. Could this possibly from the tumblers and how do I tell?

I run my lot-o and 40 pounds of rock in rotaries 24-7 all year for about $20-30 per month in electricity.

Something's goofy (or donald) with your meter reading. Do you have your meter manually read or is the meter reading electronically transmitted to the electric company's office? If manually they could have been "estimating" your usage for a few months and billing less than what you were actually using and it caught up or they could have simply misread the meter. But, no, it shouldn't double your power bill. Or, you could have a very badly malfunctioning electrical device...heating/cooling, water heater, etc.,....

That is just crazy. My 4# vibe tumbler draws .6 amp x 120volts = 72 watts x 24 hrs. = 1.73 kwh. x $ .22 per kwh. = $ .39 x 30 days = $ 11.07. $.22 per kwh. is the high rate base rate here in so.ca. is more like $ .10-.14 per kwh. Oh BTW great forum glad to be a part of it , just running my first batch and after following the guides here it is progressing well. I am a retired electrician and a desert rat.
hopes this helps regards bill

1/3 HP running 3 barrels at 20 pounds each is about $30/month in Georgia.

And you're calculations are reasonable and logical.

Call in a complaint and insist they read the meter again. They read it wrong. Either that, or else they haven't been bothering to read it for months, and now they finally had to get caught up with what you actually owe. I've had both of these things happen. It isn't caused by the tumbler. It's caused by sloppy meter readers.
