I picked up these two slabbettes of a really beautiful purple lace agate. Hoping someone has an idea on the origin?

Yup, "Royal Purple Aztec Lace" from Durango, Mexico. As opposed to Aztec Purple Lace which is another animal altogether...Mel This is Aztec Purple Lace ( more light colored and pinkish) Royal Purple Aztec Lace:

:::speechless::: Wow Just Wow I found that in the very far back room at our favorite rock shop. Meet me there some Sunday - the owner lets me dig around in his unsorted "old" stuff and I find gems like this (and your snakeskin) regularly.

Really really rare to find slabs that big and beautiful. From what I've found out, the veins were never that thick and most were very thin, much less than an inch. I have a whole tub full of rough I got from my dentist friend way back and it's all just thin vein hunks, suitable for very small cabs or tumbles only. Got to watch sun exposure too as some of it seems to have fugitive purple color that fades some in the sun. Comes from a silver mining district where I've heard it is a by product of the mine dumps....Mel

Sounds a little like the "Sow Belly" from Creede, CO Mel. It was a thick vein of amethyst lace in the way of one of the richest silver deposits ever found. The stuff from there is speckled with dots of silver. Some very pale purple and some very deep.

John, To me, the best Royal Purple has more color saturation than the Sowbelly but man, I've seen blocks of Sowbelly a foot or more thick. Those veins must have been huge....Mel

Wow! Don't know how thick the slab was as that is a cut parallel to the top and bottom of the vein, but man that must have been a challenging cut to make.
For awhile back in the 70's, dealers were selling African Blue Lace agate cut that way, parallel to the banding, and selling it as "Katanga Blue" Very similar to the pictured Aztec slab except of course, blue. I like the Aztec better.....Mel

Mel, I only collected Sow Belly one time. The material varied a lot from fairly deep purple to very pale almost white. I sold all the really nice stuff thinking I would go back every year for more but then our show schedule changed and have not been back to that area.
