What you see is what you will see if you break it up. It is glass so be carfeful wen breaking. From the looks of it may be lace. break off a chip and see if it has clear section. others may know better but I think i had a hard time to get a good polish tumbling it.

You know what Pat, you are right on the money! This rock is about ~3 lbs.....maybe cut slabs across the grain so that I can have more of what I see right now.....then I can share a few pieces with others in the family. I don't know what the attraction is, but I seen obsidian for the first time on this forum and I went looking for it at the show. Its not an expensive item (in comparison to mostly everything else) but I really like the look and the feel.
Pat, you do a lot of work on a cab machine, is obsidian something that you can work with easily? I looked up obsidian hardness and it says 5.5-6, yet mine seems harder more like 7.
Thanks

es355lucille I've never cabbed obsidian. Hopefully, others can answer you. Where are you? We/California has it as plentiful as weeds.

Sometimes this stuff will have a Schiller effect. Cut with the grain. Cheers

Thanks for the advice Fossilman, I think I may just do that with this piece. I think I will track down the vendor and pick up some small stuff for tumbling........that's another thing I have read to be cautious when tumbling not to do add other rocks......I will get enough to do a whole batch by itself.

We are headed over to Glass Buttes in a few weeks.......Going to pick up a few bags of tumbles, maybe more,if people are interested.... I hound my Obsidian rough there, than when I think I have enough,I just sit somewhere and fill Obsidian tumble up in gallon baggies..

When you tumble it, use lots of plastic tumbler pellets to cushion the load. Being glass it will chip easily.
If you decide to slab it, wear good gloves to handle & clean the slabs. That stuff shed little glass needles just like an old dog sheds fur. If you handle fresh cut slabs with bare hands, you'll spend hours with a magnifying glass & tweezers removing slivers from your hands. LOL. Been there, done that. Learned the hard way.

I remember we stopped in a town called Wagontire, Population 2, and the lady living there's house was a gas station and she made sure we filled up to get to the next gas station because we will run out if we don't. She was right. Thanks lady in Wagontire Oregon. The couple who ran the café, gas station, motel, RV park and "Wagontire International Airport" died several years ago. They were an entertaining pair. Last I went by, the place was closed, so now you have to plan on having enough gas to get to Christmas Valley, Burns, Bend, Prineville or Lakeview. Nothing but the occasional isolated ranch out there.

Check out threads by tntmom . She makes gorgeous cabs including obsidian. Thank You Pat for this information! I will go looking. Brad That looks like nice gold sheen from Glass Buttes, Oregon! Sometimes you can find a fire band in gold sheen. Fire chasers will usually tumble a bunch of pieces and then analyze each one in bright light looking for a fire band which is multi rainbow colored and super flashy. Then they go to their trim saw and cut just above the fire band parallel to it and slowly cab down to it without going through it. I love gold sheen and yours looks identical to my boxes of it from Glass Buttes. Mahogany is opaque and much more orange. Edited...... I accidentally typed Burns in my post first. That's where the person lives that I get mine from. ~Krystee
