Why not back them like you would opal, turquoise, or other valuable or thin stones. Use vinyl records (like the native artisans used to do), or compact discs (use the music side, not the label side to glue to), or even a thin layer of bondo. The backing will strengthen the stone and allow you to work on it more securely (probably not good for tumbling, but it would for cabbing). Just thinking outloud. Tom

Consider an epoxy finish for them. It will make the flats look polished and the epoxy may penetrate enough to stabilize them from breakage. I use Nu-Lustre 55, but there are a number of similar products available.
Interesting eye ball in some of those slices.
