I got to spend a couple hours talking with a couple 40 year agate hunting veterans today and picked their brains about hounding the Knobs region where I've been spending a lot of time. I soaked in all the information they had to share and handled some very nice pieces from their collections. They were willing to give me a list of creeks to try out and showed me examples of the type of colors and patterns that each is likely to produce. They also warned me about the particular stretches to avoid due to their proximity to patches of Kentucky's other cash crop. I didn't buy anything at the show because I got an invitation to go and pick through one of the guys' personal piles next weekend. He did send me home with a slab that came from the same stretch of creek I've been working. Yes, I know it's pretty fractured, but I will fill those and get a shine on it. It will look nice on my desk...until I find a better one!

Sweet. Fractures won't bother you unless you cab it. Enjoy the sharing of knowledge. Tom

I get to browse through his personal stash next weekend, which consists of several piles like this.
I may go down for the Mountain Mushroom agate hunt, or I may just hide away in a creek without everyone else and keep with the lone wolf game plan. I am, though, going to ask Mr. McIntosh if he still takes people out one on one.

That is a great specimen. I would leave it as is and display it.
