Been playing around with a few lines of code to create templates... The 3D printer has a tougher time with wide flat objects, but sure beats cutting things out by hand. Started with the standard oval sizes, and then made a mesh grid for ovals, adding/subtracting a few percent in each direction. Realized it'd be simple to do for any shape. Pretty new to all this, so aside from free form, and standard finding sizes - do folks like templates where the proportions stay fixed and only the size changes, or ones that might vary the shape to fit the patterns of the rock? Might have to give a few custom shapes away...

I like things that are different so more custom patterns rather than the same old ovals and circles.

So, different as in different shapes you like to use, or just free forming with the rock in front of you, no template involved? The symmetrical shapes don't change character much when you change proportions, but the non symmetrical ones (upper right - 3 pointy Sail thing) tend to look very different when the proportions change unequally. I just draw one shape (bezier curves can smooth out most complicated shapes) then instead of printing a single version, it spits out a grid of differently proportioned ones. Just tinkering around...

I use some standard templates, but I also like to make my own. They are made from freeform shapes that I liked. Plus, I do freeforms. It all depends on the slab and the material.
Super cool thing ya got going on. I never even thought of a 3d printer for templates. My husband wants one desperately, but we are waiting for the better quality ones to come down in price.

Why not use a cricut to cut your patterns?

Those are really great! There's some good posts at the top of this section that have led into discussion about templates also. I love my templates from Amazon & Cool Tools especially this, (I'm kinda into basic symmetrical stuff like you pictured, and I have an awful time with inside curves, so none of that for me) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YW95KI2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1These are my fav's because they're basically the same but they stretch the shape just little thinner. The only thing I'd suggest is maybe leaving a bit more plastic in between the cutouts for strength.
