I am basically a novice. I have been learning by trial and error for the last year or so. I want to slab and polish the rock below that I bought at a rock shop but I know that for some rocks there is a best orientation to cut a rock. I don't want to spoil this rock through ignorance. Does anyone have an opinion of if it makes any difference which direction I cut the rock? If I look at the second view (what I call the side view) I can see some poorly defined layers. I could cut across the broad side (Top) or try and slab in the direction of the layers even though they are not well defined. Top side

That doesnt seem to have a special orientation. What is the material?

Looks like rough labradorite. If that is the case, my answer prior, must be ignored. Lab is very difficult to orient, and every single fut may have a different angle.

Here is another couple of photos taken of the other side to show the color better. This was done inside with a flash. I thought this was sodalite but it does not have the normal white lines (just some spots) and it does not fluoresce, however I don't have a full spectrum light to really test it. I would not have thought of Labradorite because I don't see any real sheen from any angle.

I do not see any reason for special orientation on that one. For rocks like that I always choose the best/safest spot to clamp the rock and cut it according to that. Cut slices till you run out of cross feed then glue to a board and cut the rest.

Looks like rough labradorite. Def NOT labradorite. Cutting is trial and error sometimes. Nothing to it but to do it

Thanks all. I just did not want to ruin a good piece or fail to get any color out of it.

Thanks all. I just did not want to ruin a good piece or fail to get any color out of it. If there is color, you should get it from any angle. At least that is the read I am getting from our friends. That doesnt promise you will get any color at all. Surface color does not guarantee internal color.

I suspect blue adventurine quartz. I would just cut along or across bands to get pleasing patterns. Adventurine does not have a right direction.

Azurite in quartz? Whatever it is, I like it. I usually just shave all of the sides of my rough to find the direction with the best color/most appealing pattern and go from there. Don't think you can really go wrong with that stone!
