Not sure where they come from. May be hybridized. Tiny catkins, 18 inches tall. Very aggressive growers  a single hair grass  Makes a fur on the bottom of shallow ponds. Highly aggressive.   Hair grass taking over seedlings of tropical water lilies. Thousands of seedlings. Each tiny seedling can cover a 20 foot circle from now till July if given good soil and habitat  |

Is a catkin a baby cat tail? We have cat tails here, but hadn't heard of catkins.
Closer to home, our yard is being overrun by sweet violets. Hard to keep up with them.

Is a catkin a baby cat tail? We have cat tails here, but hadn't heard of catkins. Closer to home, our yard is being overrun by sweet violets. Hard to keep up with them. Catkins are the brown seed heads Pat. Sounds like sweet violets are an unwanted intruder ?  |

Ok. Sounds like catkins and cat tails are the same. Parents used them as inside decorations. Had to get rid of them before they exploded millions of little seeds.
Sweet violets are an aggressive pain!

Sweet violets are an aggressive pain! Medicinal though. They are also known as heart ease due to their long term use for addressing vascular issues like arterial plaque. |

Sweet violets are an aggressive pain! The catkins will make a mess, explosion a good description. Oh me, Pat, in my plant biz weeds are the #1 failure of aquatic nurseries. That is why I grow on concrete. Aquatic weeds about the most difficult to eradicate. Sterile processes and no people sticking their hands in various plantings. must be very clean. Sorry to hear you have an aggressive plant. You probably do not want to use Round Up and it may damage adjacent plants anyway. Something tells me the roots do not pull up easy. |

I could be wrong about this, but I think Pat is referring to Viola odorata, aka sweet violet.
They are easy enough to dig up, but like a lot of suthenahs, they are prolific seed spreaders. Have to stay on top of them to get rid of them.
ETA: Yes, I know they are from Europe. I just had to add the part about southern seed sowers, lol.

Have to stay on top of them to get rid of them. Yes, I am referring to viola odorata, and yes, they have gotten out of hand. They spread faster than we can pull them up. We rarely see the flowers because they are climbing all over each other. I just hired someone to pull them all up wherever they are found in our yard. I suspect they will reappear, but maybe we can stay on top of it. Next Thursday is the day : ) |

Sweet violet is also called heartease and has the same properties as the V. tricolor. That is why I said the historically used one, meaning the one most often mentioned in the herb manuals. There are other species with the same properties. |

Seed spreaders are enemy #1 only if the seeds readily germinate of course. Referring to plant seeds rockpickerforever lol. I have greenhouses full of 6' X 6' or 8' X 4' boxes that hold water and about 120 six inch pots. After filling the box with pots and covering them with water I may plant 3 adult plants and let them seed out into the other pots for the next year. May have 4-5 species that allow such easy planting. Or running plants will colonize just by throwing a few plants in the box. Lots of species of runners will do this. Lazy growing. Both runners and seeders must be kept isolated. Example: The absolute biggest mistake was planting wild rice. Gets about 12 feet tall. Puts out a ton of seeds. The seeds float to the edges of the earthen ponds and germinate rapidly like most annuals. Seeds stick to turtles and frogs and they spread them to other ponds. In 3 weeks time they are 2 feet tall. 2 months and 6 feet tall. Zizania aquatica  But absolutely delicious  |

We do have bird's foot violet that reap havoc as your sweet violet. A few minor ones too, small weedy ones.  |
