I'm looking for some sphere machine motors for my home made machines. I've been pricing them out a bit and looking at the Chinese motors HP uses for their machines. They are larger and quieter than the GE ones I had. Not sure the speed but they seem about the same,maybe a little faster. I could get some right now but would need to order 20 or more to get them in the under $100 range. Anybody else looking? I'd probly order 6-9 myself. Nice to have a few spares...

If they're like HF or Grizzly Chinese motors I wouldn't waste my time. Had to replace Chinese motors on equipment at the clubs shop, with less than a years service in all cases.

Will post the specs when I get em. Price for three shipped right now is $287. Which doesn't seem too bad. I'll order a test order and see how they work.

You are right. $100 ea shipped seems reasonable. I have sold the old school Ge motors for $250 ea!

The JWD motor with JWD gear head parts are: 90YYJT120-1 / 90GK15 I found these. They are good Bodine motors. Continuous duty. I realize they are running at 743 RPM. I figured that the money I saved buy buying three of these at only $39.95 can be used to purchase the 3 pair of 1 to 7 ratio pulleys, shafts and bearings I will need to get things on the grinding heads to around 100 rpm and still have enough money to finish the machine according to my design for way less than $300.00. I plan on making powder coated sheet metal drip guards for the motors due to their open design. I already have the sheet metal and powder coat machine. I have some heavy gauge sheet metal to make the grinding cup and motor mounts that mount on the hinges. I just need the base (probably 80/20), hinges, and grinding cup set ups. I have tons of stainless cap screw bolts and other hardware I will need. I added up everything I need to buy to make the machine a reality and the grand total (not including the grinding cup set up) was $282.83 Chump change as far as sphere making machines go. I hope my dream becomes a reality sometime later this year. Good find. Using belts and pulleys to reduce your RPM will have the added benefit of being able to use decent bearings on the shafts that contact the grinding cups. The output shaft bearings on most gearmotors are not designed for the application.

I might suggest mounting motors OVER the pully, as below it may get in the way when opening the work zone to install or remove work objects.
The driven shaft will be able to support significant weight. Maybe you will need a hoist to bring the balls into place. 12" plus spheres possible, I am sure.

Knock five or ten lbs off that shipping weight because they usually come attached to a piece of wood in the bottom of the heavy duty box. I think the 36 Lb. weight is more like 20 Lbs. I plan on using whatever springs I need to keep the cups in contact so, due to the slightly oversize motors I might need to use something like a rubber bungee. I'm going to try and meet with rattlehead down the road to see what he has going on in the grinding cup department as he has kindly offered to show me his setup. What do you think of my design so far rattlehead? The motors themselves are 10.5" x 5.5". So, they're not TOO big I'm definitely no expert and sad to say, not very handy in the mechanical dept....but looks good to me.

Rattlehead, did those motors turn out to be any good? I'd love, love, love to find a reasonable source and turn my cubes into spheres!

I actually haven't installed them yet as I have to mod my old machine to get em to fit. I expect them to work just fine as they are the exact same motors as the Highland Park ones.
