fossilmanI just read your post before the answers to my diagnostics. The motor seems strong enough to turn a belt, two pulleys and the driven shaft, all while a weighted barrel is not spinning and adding friction to the drive train. It ain't bad, unless I read it wrong.

Not that it will help the problem at hand but have you ever oiled the motor bushings? A drop or two on each might help with the heat.

Just changed a fan out in the refrigerator with one of those motors.
When the fan was off, it would spin like a dream when tapped.
But when it came on the force of the fan blowing pushed the shaft into the motor i guess, and it would not spin after 10 minutes of building heat. Believe the heat was locking the bearings. Also believe the force of the fan was causing friction against a (damaged)bearing not working in thrust mode. Replaced the unit $79
Not the first time one of those motors has failed in same refrigerator.

May have dust/gunk/slurry on the armature. Those little motors have close tolerances. WD 40 has solvent. Used to spray it in off road distributer caps to clean oily gunk and water out of them. Or you can use contact cleaner, most of it is acetone. May be improved chemicals. contact cleaner safe for electrical stuff. I would try plain WD 40 with the spray tube and blast it good. www.mcmelectronics.com/product/20-5515?utm_medium=cse&utm_source=bing&utm_campaign=bing

I have had the same problem with the 3# Lortone.....barrel not turning even though everything else was moving. I took everything apart, cleaned each part, re-lubed, changed the belt, and no luck.
The solution lies in the tackiness of the rollers and barrel. Lysol dual action wipes work like magic! Use the scrubbing side of the wipe to clean the barrel and the rollers, use a clean dry cloth to remove excess cleaner, and in a few seconds you have a tacky barrel that the rollers grip on to. My alternative cleaner is rubbing alcohol.
Hope you find the solution!

Sometimes I have to take a piece of sandpaper and and roughen up the roller as its turning with barrel off. Also have to rough up the barrel sometimes as they get slick and no traction. This is on my 12lb barrels, don't know about the small one.Same principle should apply! snuffy Snuffy, did that and still nothing... Was going to suggest this, but the idea of putting some rubber bands around the barrel sounds like a great thing to try.

Loaded the barrel with rock put it on the machine, its now tumbling away.....Quiet too, just like it was before... Thank you all-Thumbs up

Do you buy WD 40 by the gallon James?? LOL Change to oils and things just keep on going. Corn based fuel causes the most problems(in carbs). Hey, any motor around tumbler slurry is at risk. Tumbling abrasives as bad as it gets on bearings. Have had 2 tumbler bearings and one motor to trash due to slurry spills.

fossilmanI didn't read all of the replies but I've had problems with the outside of the barrel getting dirty causing it to stop turning. I run two Lortones and have had this problem a couple times. A good cleaning of the drum has corrected it every time. Good luck. Let us know what you come up with.

Those motors are usually shot when you have to start nursing them with lubricant.
