Getting 3-4 week grind times(between grit additions) without opening barrel on rotary. Must recharge and thin slurry very 3-4 weeks. Silicon carbide chunks from broken grinding wheels making grind easy. 5 inch X 1 inch 36 grit silicon carbide(not aluminum oxide) grinding wheels broken to chunks: After about three weeks, size reduced by 2/3rds These (soft at Mohs 6)rhyolites were run 3 weeks with 4-5 cups of SiC chunks, barrel never opened. Looks like less than a cup of SiC chunks left over. So 4-5 cups reduced to less than 1 cup. Closer view after 3 weeks and being reduced in size about 70%. Note full size SiC 36 particles still being shed creating time release situation. Ungraded chunks of SiC out of China in one ton quantities is 40 cents to 1 dollar per pound: www.alibaba.com/product-detail/DYAN-silicon-carbide-used-for-Raw_60456262465/showimage.html

So, um, where do you find those broken wheels?

So, um, where do you find those broken wheels? Found about 150 pounds in an industrial junkyard Napaleon. Wish more were available.

So, um, where do you find those broken wheels? A bulk load of grinding wheels could be shaped out of China at a cheap per pound price. The fusion of the particles to a grinding wheel is very well done to be able to spin at several thousand RPM and not fly apart and passing thru your head. Chunks have about a 3 week life in a tumbler. Perfect timing for slurry adjustment. Three 3 week runs and your rocks are going to be pretty well done in coarse mode. But must do an SiC 220 run afterwards since the 36 grit is hardly ever broken down. i.e., a few chunks are always left over and must be removed before moving to 220.

The ultimate would be expendable fused media made out of SiC coarse grit in approximately one inch ovals/balls/cylinders. Similar to these fusions but without the metal shaft. Makes for some real lazy coarse grinding. My career as mechanical engineer was to reduce labor, assist ergonomics to older experienced factory workers. They would have given me a star for this one. Old bastards used to give me holy hell, lol.
