Hi, i went to wasson's bluff / parrsboro/ nova scotia and i found this huge piece of crystal on the sea shore.... there is no matrix to it and it is sparkly. I would like to know what this is. At first i tought it was gypsum or selenite but i now doubt because i found piece of selenite and also a lot of gypsum, orange and white aproximalty 2-3km from it but they are actualy different from this piece... also, it sound like glass, or ceramic or porcelain. Thanks! [WwwURL=http://s1230.photobucket.com/user/Jessica_Savoie/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20160520_124741641_zpsxrwiovtb.jpg.html] [/URL]

Axtully it does look a lot like gypsum. Gypsum crystallizes in many forms.including clusters of smaller crystals. And you can see the layering, which is also a characteristic.

Scratch first with a pocket knife. Then if that is positive a hunk of marble.

Ook, gypsum would be possible, i know there is a lot of it a few km away. i have a lot of big crystal of calcite, it is different, also the sound is different.. it can be scratch with my nails, there is still some dry clay on it, the same substance as the gypsum actually...

Gypsum is soft enough to scratch with your nail. It also will not react to an acid like vinegar the way calcite will. So there is another simple test you can do. But I still think is is selenite. We have tons of it around here and I have seen a lot of similar stuff to that.

But have not heard calcite do that either and harder stones like chalcedony, which can do that, cannot be scratched with a fingernail. I have bunch of selenite laying around here Like these pieces. I guess I could go tap a piece and see what it sounds like.

Very nice. Did not know that you had colored gypsum like that up there. Not a common color. Most of the orangish gypsum comes from Turkey and is sold as red selenite even though it is actually orange satin spar.

The exact spot is called clark's head. It is full of satin spar like that all along the cliff . You can also find a lot of it on the sea shore around as they brake off really easy

I had found a single large chunk of red and white satin spar I wanted to make a table out of. There is also some white selenite, yellow selenite and a lot of the white satin spar in the area and I found once piece of green selenite. If you can find the selenite (clear crystals) they can be polished up really nice. Just round off the corners as you go to prevent splitting the crystals.

The first one is Gypsum. The second one is Gypsum (Satin Spar). Lots of both found between the Parrsboro Campground beach and the walk towards Clarke Head.
Neat to see the Calcite(?) crystals on top of the Satin Spar. That's new.
